What Would You Ask, Jesus?
What a powerful question—one that sparks deep and insightful conversation.
As you can imagine, there are many different responses to this question, especially from the perspective of an adult in custody serving behind bars.
Some responses echo the cries of the ancient heroes:
“When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, ‘Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!’” – Luke 5:8
“This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.” – 1 Timothy 1:15
One student responds with a question of his own:
Why me?
Jesus, don’t you know me? Don’t you know what I’ve done? Don’t you know the things I’ve been involved in? And yet, you know me more intimately, more deeply than any other being. Still, you initiate and desire a relationship with me.
Tell me—why, please?
What an honest response. The underlying question is this: Jesus, why do you want to be my friend? These questions resonate not only with those who are physically imprisoned but also with those who experience invisible imprisonment in the world outside. Emotions rise, gratitude takes root, and the light of future grace begins to shine.
For a moment, the story of the Samaritan woman comes to them. Jesus knew her entire past—he knew what had left her spiritually dehydrated. He knew she had been drinking from the wrong well. Many of the students can relate. Then, the raw testimonies surface—stories of how God provided a way out, how a great pause (prison) ultimately saved their lives, and how He is moving inside OSCI.
- He knows me.
- He loves me.
- He accepts me.
- He desires me.
- I belong to Him, and He is mine.
Your gifts are providing hope, purpose, and a sense of happiness in the face of trials. Thank you.
